Our Quest
Our History
Founded and operated by post-op trans folks for post-op trans folks, Quest House is a labor of love and a beacon of community support for transmasculine individuals going through the uniquely intense experience of bottom surgery. Established in 2016 in a small apartment, Quest House soon evolved into a beloved resource. Led by the dedicated Meiko Xavier, Quest House positively impacted the lives of over a hundred transmasculine individuals before its closure in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing the vital need for its services, a committed team of volunteers rallied to revive Quest House and continue the organization’s legacy of community care.
THE HEALING BEGINS
Founded by post-op trans folks for post-op trans folks. Quest House began in a humble apartment and was made possible by the generosity of a trans elder. Co-founder Meiko Xavier took on stewardship of our mission and space and QH quickly built a reputation as a trusted community resource.
QUEST HOUSE 2.0
Quest House expanded to meet the rising need for safe and affordable post-op lodging and doubled our reach by moving to a larger home where more folks could recover together at once.
A FAREWELL
After positively impacting the lives of over a hundred transmasculine individuals, Quest House faced an unexpected and unfortunate pandemic-related closure in May 2020.
PICKING UP THE TORCH
Inspired by his own experience and the legacy of Quest House, Owen Dempsey began hosting folks in a small apartment recovery pad. The healing and connection he witnessed motivated a goal to open a dedicated transmasculine bottom surgery recovery home by Summer 2024.
THE QUEST CONTINUES
After connecting with oliver flowers, founder of T4T Caregiving and former house host, the Quest House revival was officially set in motion. A committed team of volunteers rallied together, and we’re excited to put down our roots in Oakland and serve our community for years to come.
Our Team
Quest House is driven by a committee of transmasculine community members from around the country, spanning a variety of backgrounds, lived experiences, and areas of expertise. We are healers, educators, advocates, healthcare professionals, organizers, and community leaders who are committed to transforming trans healing. The vast majority of our volunteers have gone through the bottom surgery process ourselves, so we are intimately aware of the unique needs of folks walking this intense path, and we are honored to hold space for others going through this monumental rite of passage.
